The third season consisted of 18 episodes, split into two parts. Part one and two aired simultaneously on June 6 and July 18, 2012 respectively. On October 22, 2012, ABC Family released a few days before the start of the third season on October 24, 2012, that it had ordered a fourth season. On October 26, 2012, it was confirmed that the fourth season will be set in 2014, almost two years after the conclusion of the third season.
On June 19, 2012, it was confirmed that the third season would be the last season of the show. The third season also had its 100th episode on June 5, 2012, and also marked the 100th episode of the show overall. The season premiere was watched by 1.6 million viewers.
On May 15, 2013, it was announced that production for the fourth season began in Baltimore, Maryland on May 19, 2013, and was filmed from June 6–19, 2013. The season premiered on March 3, 2014, on ABC Family.
Cast and characters
Main
Tori Kelly as Jenna Marshall, the fifth recurring character to appear on the show. She is introduced in the first episode as an acquaintance of Emily Fields (Alisha Boe), but it is later revealed that she and Emily had been in a romantic relationship in the past. When her parents, Caleb and Paige Marshall (Benjamin Wadsworth and Michiel Huisman), travel to Europe for a two-month vacation, they leave Jenna in the care of her maternal grandparents. Meanwhile, Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) has been spending more time with Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) when Spencer's mother, Ashley Marin (Nicollette Sheridan), moves out of town, prompting Hanna to try to reunite the two. Her mother later dies in a car accident. Jenna and Hanna become close when Jenna moves in with Hanna after her grandfather suffers a heart attack. In October 2012, she becomes a series regular.
Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin, a 16-year-old high school senior who is the third recurring character to appear on the show. She is shown to be very insecure about her appearance and often struggles to make friends. Hanna is portrayed as very manipulative and has a reputation as a troublemaker in her school. She moves into Mona Vanderwaal's (Ian Harding) basement and she becomes friends with him. She is afraid that her parents are forcing her to become a doctor.
